This week’s card is Hidetsugu’s Second Rite. One of the things holding this card back is the fact that opponents can deliberately mana burn to avoid being at 10 life.

    Except mana burn happens at the end of the phase, which is not before this spell resolves.

    But if your opponent knows you have it in hand, yeah, you’re out of luck.

    Which is why smart players always included Telepathy in their sideboards while Kamigawa was in standart.

    And REALLY smart players would have them main-deck.

    If my opponent is at ten, and I have three lightning bolts in hand, I tell them I have a Hidetsugu’s Second Rite to trick them into mana burning themselves.

    It doesn’t come up often, BUT WHEN IT DOES….
