ORLANDO, Fla. — A local barbarian was excused from jury duty Friday after an exchange with the judge during the voir dire process of a criminal trial in the county courthouse.
Kamahl the Pit Fighter was asked by judge Mary Gonzalez in courtroom 10A here whether he would be able to follow the laws and instructions of the court that the defendant is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, and whether the barbarian would not hold it against the defendant that he did not testify.
“Under our laws and our constitution, the defendant is not required to testify. He does not have to say anything,” Gonzalez told assembled prospective jurors Friday. “And as a juror, you are required not to hold against him the fact of whether he testifies or not,” she said.
“Now, Mr. … Kamahl … would you be able to follow that law?” the judge asked.
“Laws are for the weak,” the barbarian told the judge and the attorneys for the prosecution and defense.
“The strong take what they want,” he added.
Gonzalez informed the barbarian that he was excused from jury duty and that this ended his obligation to the state for this jury service without requiring either of the attorneys to use one of their challenges.
Earlier, the judge had informed potential jurors that the trial for which the voir dire process was taking place was concerning a charge of rape.
“‘Rape’? What is ‘rape’?” Kamahl asked the judge.
“‘Rape’ is the forcible sexual assault by one person of another person,” the judge told Kamahl.
“Oh, you mean ‘mating ritual,’” Kamahl said.
