A Look Back At The First Un- Set

Before there was Unhinged, there was another hilarious Magic: The Gathering set of wacky cards and amusing art. We’re talking, of course, about Unlimited.

Chaos Orb

Chaos Orb is the staple joke card from the first Un- set. Players actually arranged their permanents, flipped the card through the air and so on! Absolutely hysterical stories circulated about players putting their cards on the wall.

Stasis

Some joke cards are funny just because of the art. Who doesn’t love the moon, a ball, a see-saw, Dada and a dog-man?

Stasis

The Hive

The joke here, of course, is that you’ll need a magnifying glass both to kill the insects and to read the card!

Living Lands

Some cards from Un- sets make reference to something from real life. “Enchanted, killed and so forth” was an amusing homage to the way that Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for speaking.

Living Lands

Tundra, etc.

Sometimes, a parody card isn’t a parody because it’s so bad — it’s a parody because it’s so good! These wacky lands were blatantly better than basics! It might as well say to add a million mana to your mana pool or something!

Tundra

Moxen

If you thought Tundra and so on were better than basic lands, take a look at these! They’re like lands, but you can play more than one a turn! People howled when they saw them for the first time.

Ancestral Recall

The joke here, of course, is the words “or force opponent”!

Earthbind

Some of the jokes in Unlimited were a little more cerebral. This “metajoke” is about the fact that this art is way, way too sexual to be on a Magic card.

(Red) Island

The art for (Red) Island is redder than the art on any Mountain in the set! Plus, the Island is like one big Mountain! Boy, did this throw players for a loop. It’s like an optical illusion!
